General Information

The University of Miami Democrats is appalled at the lack of tangible and significant evidence provided by the Bush administration in regards to impending war against Iraq.  The proverbial "Mount Everest amount of evidence" Colin Powell was supposed to present to the United Nations ended up being nothing more than sandy pebbles of circumstantial findings.  In response to such irresponsible and deceptive tactics undertaken by the Bush administration, the Democrats have decided to create an anti-war coalition of campus organizations to voice their dissatisfaction with the pugilistic tendencies of the administration.  As daily events shape the course of the administration's overt desire to attack Iraq, peaceful demonstrations will be organized in response to any unreasonable actions taken.  It is our responsibility as citizens to exercise the freedom of expression and virtue that our procedural republic allows.  Everyone is welcome at our peaceful demonstrations - the administration cannot fault anyone in attendance.  All our peaceful demonstrations are made aware to the Department of Public Safety, and locations have been reserved through the University since we are a registered organization.  There are no negative repercussions for attending, so feel free to attend one and all!

History of Past Processions

March 4, 2003:  University of Miami College Democrats, in conjunction with Amnesty International and Advocates for Legal Force [ALF] held the second anti-war demonstration at the University Center (UC) Patio from 12-2.  More than 150 students witnessed as individuals from all walks of like spoke up for and against military action in Iraq.  Music was played, and performers included UM Democrats President Christian G. Wilson on the Congo drums of peace.  Students also dressed up as a 15 foot tall statue of liberty, and others created more signs to inform the student body of the ills of military engagement in Iraq.

Drop Bush, Stop War: Many students from UM College Democrats and other organizations have expressed their anti-war sentiments through campus protests.

February 18, 2003:  University of Miami College Democrats held the first anti-war demonstration and procession on the university grounds since the Vietnam War.  Students and faculty alike joined together and spoke at "The Rock" and also walked together around campus to peacefully voice their dissention.  The procession numbered more than 50 individuals and more individuals entered the procession as we proceeded.  The University of Miami College and Young Democrats consider the peaceful demonstration a resounding success and a mere glimpse of what is to come if the path to war of the Bush Administration continues.

Students from all walks of life join together in unity to show their overwhelming dissention against impending war in Iraq.

Map of the Procession

The following is a map of the procession to be taken during the University of Miami Peace Rally April 1, 2003 from 12:00-2:00 at the UC patio located inside the University Center across from the food court.  Peaceful dissenters will meet at the UC patio between 12:00-12:30.  At 12:30, the peaceful procession will begin and will follow the prescribed path below.  At approximately 1:00, we will return to the UC patio and hold and open-mic period in which students, faculty, and others are welcome to voice their opinion concerning the impending conflict.

Peaceful Demonstrators will meet at the UC patio at 12:00 p.m. on April 1.  At 12:30, we will proceed north-east towards the Ashe Administration building - where we will pause for a few moments.  Following the pause, we will continue towards the Memorial Building, then south towards the Learning Center.  After a brief pause at the Learning Center, the procession will proceed through the Merrick Building and through the School of Business Administration.  After another pause in the courtyard at the School of Business Administration, the procession will proceed back to the UC patio for the open-mic session at approximately 1:00 p.m.

Note:  This is a peaceful procession.  Therefore, we ask that disturbances be kept to a minimum and no unnecessary noise is made to intentionally disrupt classes.  The University of Miami Young Democrats will not be held liable for any disturbances, damages to school property, or any other illegal actions committed  by the individual.  Remember, doing any of the aforementioned will do exactly as the Bush administration wishes - to mark us as irrational rabble-rousing youths.
